Breaking School Records is the Thing to Do

WHEELING, WV – The personal improvements are showing for the Franciscan University of Steubenville track and field team during Saturday's Wheeling Jesuit University's 2010 Bill Van Horne Invitational.  And head coach Vince Oliver couldn't be more pleased.

"We had some very impressive showings this past weekend,” Oliver commented.  “What these men and women are doing both in practice and in the arena of competition is improving every day.  They are seeing it and feeling it in themselves by now and the overall results are showing it.”

Baron sprint team captain, Patrick Meier, continued his teammates' trend from the Grove City Mini-Meet of breaking personal and school records.  Competing in four events, Meier broke three school records and bested his personal marks in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes.  The new school records set by Meier are now 11.96 seconds in the 100 meter dash, 23.89 seconds in the 200 meter dash and 51.79 seconds in the 400 meter dash.

Tim Machaud again beat his personal best and the school record in the javelin.  Establishing a new record of 43.37 meters at the Grove City Mini Meet on March 23, Michaud reset the record to now stand at 44.07 meters.

Distance team co-captain, Kevin Codd, participated in a 5000 meter run and 3000 meter steeplechase at an Ironman competition over the weekend.  Codd broke his own school record by fifteen seconds by running a time of 10:34:26 in the steeplechase event.

Congratulations are in order for the following athletes who also earned points for Franciscan University: Kailey Gotta, Kevin Leroy and Katherine Manion who competed in the 5K run.

Oliver had these inspiring words for his athletes: “Keep working hard, keep progressing and compete not only with your opponents, but with yourself!”
