STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville
Barons baseball team hosted a doubleheader versus the Medaille
College Mavericks on Saturday, losing 7-1 and 6-1. The Barons
now stand 3-8 overall in their 2010 season and 0-2 with the
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The Barons struggled early in the first game, giving up two runs
in the first inning and four in the second, trailing 6-0 at the top
of the fourth inning. Ryan Marrow scored the solitary run for
FUS in the fourth and Erik Skibinski scored the final point for the
Mavericks in the bottom of the same inning, wrapping up the game,
7-1.
The second game went similarly for Franciscan. The Barons
trailed 4-0 after the first inning and were unable to overcome the
deficit for the rest of the game. Anthony Pontarelli scored
the Barons' sole run in the top of the second inning, but the
Mavericks scored two more runs en route to the 6-1 loss for
Franciscan. Baron pitcher Daniel Brink only gave up one
earned run in the game.
“We got two great pitching performances from Kevin Marrow
and Daniel Brink today,” Barons head coach Dr. Robert Marrow
noted. “We struggled at the plate today. We also
had a couple of key defensive errors that cost us.
We're looking forward to our game against Mount
Aloysius.”
“We're still gelling together, and we need to show
up ready to play each and every game with fire and
intensity,” right fielder Andrew Danaher commented.
“That's what we're going to bring when we come to
practice on Monday…we're going to work harder, and
we'll improve.”
The Barons travel to Cresson, PA on Wednesday to play Mount
Aloysius Mounties at 1 p.m.
