Linscomb Shows Strong Pitching in First Conference Game

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville Lady Barons softball team hosted the Mount Aloysius College Lady Mounties in a doubleheader Wednesday night, losing both games 9-0 and 6-0.  With the losses, the Lady Barons dropped to an overall standing of 1-7, and a 0-2 standing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

“Overall, I was pretty happy with how we played today,” Lady Barons head coach Jen Biela remarked.  “We were competitive in both games against a really tough team; Mount Aloysius is one of the toughest teams in our conference.”

The Lady Barons struggled offensively in the first game.  They managed only three hits the entire game from Bethany Fischer, Krista Bertke, and Emily Whiteside.  Meanwhile, Whitney Shearer led the Lady Mounties with two hits, three RBIs, and one run scored, while teammate Whitney Giedroc contributed two hits, two RBIs, and one run.

“Hitting was tough for us,” Biela noted.  “Lady Mounties Jessica Seasoltz pitched well today, and we just had trouble getting on base.”

The Lady Barons regrouped for the second game and came out much stronger, trailing by only 1-0 at the end of the third inning.  This was largely due to the pitching of Shelbi Linscomb who pitched extremely well, especially at the close of the top of the third inning when three runners were left on base.

“Shelbi was definitely strong in the circle today,” Biela remarked.  “She had a lot of strikeouts and really took control.”

Catcher Katie Quitney led the Lady Barons in the second game with two hits, including a double, while Catherine Durand also registered a hit.  Amy Miller was the offensive standout for the Lady Mounties with three hits and a run.

“We play Medaille tomorrow, and we're looking forward to that game,” Biela said.  “They are another tough team, but I've told the girls that when we come out with enthusiasm and determination, we can compete with any team in this conference.”

The Lady Barons host a doubleheader versus Medaille at 3:00 p.m. this Thursday.
