Barons Dominate Doubleheader versus Panthers

BRADFORD, PA – The Franciscan University of Steubenville Baron Tennis team hit the road Sunday afternoon for doubleheader action against University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The Barons dominated the Panthers in both games, 6-3 and 7-2.

In the first set of doubles, Andrew Straub and Nick Cundiff won the number one match against Brian O'Campo and Mike Teresi, 8-2. This started a winning trend in doubles, as Chris Cooper and Matt Alexander went on to beat Calvin McAlee and Ryan Meyer, 8-2, giving the Barons a 2-1 advantage going into the singles matches.

In the number one singles match, Cooper put away O'Campo 6-0, 6-2. Straub battled with McAlee before prevailing 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Cundiff played Teresi to a 1-1 draw before Teresi was forced to retire, giving Cundiff the victory. Alexander had a tough match with Meyer, going 5-10, 12-10, (5-0). Mathisen also battled, but beat, Mateer 10-8, 8-10, (10-8). Pitt-Bradford's Matt Lee was able to salvage one win in singlesr, defeating Clark Thomspon 6-1, 6-1.

The second match proved much of the same for both teams. In doubles, Cundiff and Straub handled McAlee and Lee in the number one seed with an 8-2 victory. Cooper and Alexander beat O'Campo and Meyer 8-1. Teresi and Mateer clinched one win for the Panthers, defeating Thompson and Mathisen 8-4.

In the singles, Cooper was stellar in the number one match, blanking McAlee in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Straub defeated O'Campo, 6-2, 6-2. Pitt-Bradford put up a better fight in the ensuing matches, with Teresi battling Cundiff before falling 2-6, 7-5, 1-6. Alexander fought with Meyer before prevailing 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-0. The Panthers managed to grab the last two matches, with Mateer beating Mathisen 6-1, 5-7, 6-3; and Thompson falling to Lee 6-0, 6-0.

"We played really well," said Baron head coach Curtis Allen. "I'm really pleased. We battled hard in some matches, but we were able to close out and win. I'm really pleased with our team today."

Franciscan's record now improves to 4-8 on the season.
