STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville
Barons baseball team hosted the University of Pittsburgh at
Bradford Panthers in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, losing both
games 10-6 and 17-1. The losses move the Barons to a season
standing of 4-22, and 1-13 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference.
The Barons struggled to find their momentum in each of the
games. They were competitive throughout the first game, but
gave up five runs in the second inning from which the Barons were
unable to recover.
“A mix of things didn't go well for us in the first
game,” Barons head coach Dr. Robert Marrow said.
“We played good defense most of the game, but we just
couldn't get out of the second inning, and that cost us. We
had a couple of little mistakes, and we allowed them to load the
bases and walk in runs.”
Jake Machado had a hit, an RBI, and scored two runs in the first
game, while Rocco Auteri had a hit and two RBI. Matt Liedel
contributed two hits, one RBI, and one run, and Matt Pomeisl scored
two runs.
The second game was very difficult for the Barons in the 17-1
loss. Machado, Auteri, and Liedel accounted for the three
hits the Barons had in the game, and Liedel scored the sole
run.
“We just didn't show to play in game two – it's as
simple as that,” Coach Marrow commented. “We
didn't take advantage of runners who were in position to
score.”
The Barons travel tomorrow for their next game versus the
Bobcats of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 1 p.m.
