STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville
Barons baseball team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh at
Greensburg to take on the Bobcats in a doubleheader Sunday
afternoon, losing 10-6 and 7-5. With the losses, the Barons
fell to a 4-24 standing, and 1-15 in the Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference.
The Barons were competitive in the first game, taking an early
2-0 lead. However, Pitt-Greensburg rallied back in the fifth
inning, scoring seven runs to take the lead permanently.
“We played well in the first game,” Barons head
coach Dr. Robert Marrow remarked. “We played really
solid defense. Daniel Brink was
injured in the fifth inning, and that cost us.”
Anthony
Pontarelli led the Barons in the first game with four hits, one
RBI, and two runs. Matthew Pomeisl
also had a solid effort with three hits and an RBI. Rocco
Auteri had two hits and two runs, and Matt Leidel had two hits, a
pair of RBIs, and one run.
The Barons played an even tighter game in the second contest of
the doubleheader, but still came up short. They took an early
2-0 lead, but the Bobcats came back to even the score at 2-2.
The Barons went up 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, and
Pitt-Greensburg scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to tie
the game again, 3-3. Franciscan led 5-4 in the sixth, but the
Bobcats scored three runs with bases loaded and two outs to take a
7-5 lead they held for the rest of the game.
Ryan Marrow
was the offensive standout for the Barons in the second game with
four hits, one run, and one RBI. Kevin Marrow had two
hits and two RBI, while Tom Costello had two hits and a run.
“We had ten base hits and two errors to their six hits and
five errors in the second game,” Coach Marrow
commented. “We played well, but just didn't do enough
to win it. We made some really nice defensive plays,
including a couple of double plays. They were just a good
team, and we came up short.”
The Barons' next game is Wednesday at Franciscan University's
Vaccaro Field against Penn State Altoona at 1 p.m.
