MONACA, PA – The Franciscan University of
Steubenville's softball team faced tough competition Friday
afternoon, as they fell to the Lady Lions of Penn State Beaver 20-5
and 11-2 in the non-conference doubleheader.
Shelbi Linscomb started on the mound for the Lady Barons in the
first game. Linscomb pitched two innings, giving up nine earned
runs off of eight hits with four strikeouts. In relief, Lara
Plumlee pitched another two innings, giving up 11 runs and 10 hits.
It was a tough game defensively for both teams, each committing
five errors a piece.
Katie Quitney was the bright spot offensively, going 2-for-3
with a run and a RBI. Bethany Fischer went 2-for-2 while scoring a
run of her own. Monica Recznik went 1-for-2 with a RBI, while
Plumlee and Sarah Higinbotham went 1-for-3 and contributed one run
apiece.
In the second game, Plumlee started on the mound for the Lady
Barons, lasting one inning – giving up eight hits and five
earned runs. Linscomb came in relief, pitching the final three
innings. Linscomb surrendered five earned runs off seven hits with
four strikeouts.
Higinbotham went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Quitney went
1-for-3 with a RBI, while Catherine Durand and Krista Bertke went
1-for-2 each for the Lady Barons on the afternoon.
"It was a tough day," said head coach Jen Biela.
"We definitely have room for growth. We can play better than
this."
Franciscan will look to get on track at home versus
D'Youville College this Saturday at North End Field.
