Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Lady Baron Tennis team claimed their
first victory of the year for Franciscan University of Steubenville
Saturday afternoon, dismissing host Medaille College, 7-2. The Lady
Barons now stand 1-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference and 1-1 overall on the season.
Franciscan dominated singles play, sweeping all six matches.
Though for some it didn't come easy.
"We really had to fight hard for the win," said head coach
Curtis Allen. "I was very proud of the girls that had to fight for
each point."
In the number one singles match, Taylor McColgan
rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the next two sets,
7-6 and 10-4.
Doubles proved to be a challenge that Lady Baron combination Kiah
Christiansen and Amanda Boik were
willing to take. Seeded in the number three spot, the two came
through with a 8-2 victory. The other two doubles matches were both
close 8-5 losses.
Any struggles that the doubles teams had were righted by singles
triumphs. Both Lyndsay Nadeau and
Lucia
Neugenbauer clinched their wins with matching 6-2, 6-3 sets.
Number one seed Taylor McColgan needed a third set to earn her win
against Medaille's Courtney Kopper, 4-6, 7-6(3), 0-1(4). Freshman
Mariette Van der Wegen swept her competition with a 6-1, 6-4 match
victory.
The Lady Barons got their Buffalo doubleheader started on the
right note as they stay in New York for the night to take on
D'Youville College this Sunday at 1 p.m.
