Barons Still Looking for Win No. 1, Fall to Bethany

Box Score

BETHANY, W.Va.—Still without their first win of the 2010 season, the Franciscan University of Steubenville men's soccer team traveled to Bethany College seeking to end their five-game losing streak. However, Bethany's offense proved too strong for Franciscan as the Barons dropped their sixth straight by a score of 6-0.

Bethany's Arkangelo James was the main offensive force for the Bison, as the freshman scored two goals and recorded an assist, all within the first half.

The Bison offensive rush began just ten minutes into the game with a pass from James to Cameron Ward to take an early 1-0 lead. Six minutes later James jumped into the scoring action, finding the back of the net unassisted. Bethany's third and fourth goals came less than a minute apart when Tomas Gonzalez scored unassisted at the 26:54 mark and James tallied his second at 27:35. Brendan Derry tucked one away for Bethany right before the half, and Justin Wilkinson rounded out the scoring in the second half.

Unlike the first five games of the season, the Barons were not tremendously outplayed on paper. Franciscan had 20 shots on goal to Bethany's 22, they received five corner kicks to Bethany's eight, and committed ten fouls to Bethany's 11. But by the time the final horn blew, the Bison lead the most important stat: scoring, 6-0.

The Barons will play their first conference match at home this Saturday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. against Medaille College.
