Box Score STEUBENVILLE – It was a showdown between the women's
soccer teams of Medaille College and Franciscan University Saturday
afternoon. Medaille pushed the attack and Franciscan's
defense responded, holding the Lady Maverick offense and pushing
the 1-1 final score into double overtime. The Lady Barons stand
2-3-1 overall on the season and 0-0-1 after their first Allegheny
Mountain Collegiate Conference match.
"I was very happy with the tie by my girls. We
didn't play perfect but the Lord really blessed us today and
we were able to play very hard against a very competitive Medaille
team," said head coach Johann Marin.
The Lady Barons were outshot, but held firm. Lady Baron
goalkeeper Lauren Koath faced 28 Maverick shots with 13 on
target. Koath saved 12, with 7 coming in the second
half. The only blemish on Koath's save record arrived
at the 54-minute mark by Maverick Mary Smialek, giving Medaille a
1-nil lead.
Lady Baron Regina Recznik, a second-half substitution, popped a
header past Medaille keeper Denay O'Connor to equalize the
scoreboard. Two overtime periods later, neither team could pull
ahead to take the win, but the Lady Barons were able to
congratulate each other on a hard-fought match.
The Lady Barons will return to action on Wednesday, September
29, at Washington & Jefferson College. Game time is set for 7
p.m.
