Box Score BRADFORD, Pa.—The Franciscan University Lady Barons traveled to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Saturday afternoon to take on the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference number two team for the second time. Earlier in the season the Lady Barons fell by 25 to the Lady Panthers, and despite losing 64-63 this time around, the game was just a little bit different.
The Barons had four players in double-digits on the afternoon, with freshman Hannah Flanagan (5-10 from three-point line) leading the way with a game-high of 15 points. Christine Conrad added 13, Molly Coogan tallied 11, and Sarah Clemente finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
"Hannah [Flanagan] had a big game; she hit some big shots when we needed them. Everybody worked really hard," said head coach Luke Heusel.
After battling back from a six-point deficit with less than two minutes to play, the Lady Barons found themselves down by just one point with 20 seconds left on the clock. They committed four fouls in the next four seconds to send the Lady Panthers to the line to shoot one-and-one.
Pitt-Bradford's Lubi Taylor front-rimmed her first shot; the Lady Barons gathered in the rebound and called a timeout. On the ensuing possession, Flanagan was fouled coming off of a screen and was sent to the line for a one-and-one chance to win the game with 1.9 seconds on the clock. Flanagan could not convert her first freebie and time expired as the ball was knocked around for the remaining two seconds of the contest.
"We were just at the line with one second left against the second best team in the conference with the chance to win it," Heusel noted. "Great stuff; we've got to try and keep this mentality."
The Lady Barons shot just 36 percent from the field overall on the afternoon, but they shot 53 percent from beyond the arch—making the difference. Franciscan also totaled 19 offensive rebounds as part of a 37 rebound effort, 11 more than their opposition.
"Tonight's team is the team that we're going to see more of. They continued to put themselves back in the game with one defensive stop after another. That's the kind of play we're capable of," Heusel added.
The Lady Barons are now 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the AMCC. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 26, at home against the Lady Mounties of Mount Aloysius College. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
