Career Highs Despite Mount Aloysius Loss

STEUBENVILLE— Franciscan University's Baron basketball team faced the Mount Aloysius Mounties Wednesday night and suffered a 98-79 defeat. The Barons now stand 2-14 overall on the season and 2-9 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Despite losing by the biggest deficit all season, the Barons continued to make positive school history.

Facing a team with an affinity for three-pointers, Baron co-captains Thomas Kleinschnitz and Connor Flanagan were the standouts on the night. "The team was led by Thomas and Connor," noted head coach Sean Donovan, "Connor found his stride in the second half."

Flanagan's strong performance against Mt. Aloysius earned him a career high of 30 points in a game. Flanagan previously held a personal best of 27 clinched during his 2008 season. Shooting 2-2 from the free-throw line, he also shot 50 percent from the three-point line, and 46 percent from the field on the night. Flanagan now shares the second place spot with Robert Slattery for most points in a game. Kleinschnitz holds the school record with 39 points shot last week against La Roche College.

Kleinschnitz totaled 24 points, five rebounds, six steals, and four assists against the Mounties. Aside from his 30 points, Flanagan added nine rebounds and three assists.

"Defense was our downfall tonight," said Coach Donovan. "We met a real athletic team and just couldn't stop them, and we let them control the tempo."

Mt. Aloysius's Joey Stephenson is currently in the running for an NCAA record for three-pointers. He scored 18 points on the night and shot 3-7 from the three-point line.

"In the middle of the first half we hit a cold spot," noted Donovan. "We knew we had to take some big stops defensively." The Mounties held a 48-32 lead at the half and never relinquished it.

The Barons travel to Medaille College this Saturday, January 29, to take on the number three team in the AMCC. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
