GREENSBURG, Pa.— Franciscan University's men and women's cross country teams competed Saturday morning at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Invitational at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds. The men's team came in sixth place out of the nine teams competing in the 8K, while the women placed fourth out of twelve teams for the 6K race.
All Franciscan cross country runners who did not compete the previous day in the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio, ran the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational, a particularly hilly course new to the team.
Finishing first for the Lady Barons was senior Mary Neven Brockway in 18th overall place (27:47). Kate Paulmann was second for the Lady Barons, coming in as the 22nd finisher (28:02). Finishing in a strong pack were freshman Elise Zajicek in 24th place (28:03), Colene Smith in 25th (28:06), Allison Huelseman in 27th (28:21), and Emily Kraudel in 29th (28:36).
The first Baron to complete the 8K was freshman Thomas Hogan in 19th overall place (30:46), followed by David Willems in 24th place (31:19), and Christian Ohnimus in 26th (31:45). Dale Brewer was next to finish for the Barons, crossing the line at 31:53 in 27th place. Jonah Carlstrom came in 32nd (32:26), Matthew Krepel in 39th (32:53), and Joseph Folse in 55th (37:48).
Head coach Daniel Kuebler did not attend this meet since he traveled with the top runners the previous day to Cedarville. The assistant coaches noted how the Pitt-Greensburg Invite was a particularly good meet because greater focus could be given to the middle-speed runners who usually do not get as much attention.
The team travels next to Oberlin, Ohio, for the Intra-Regional Rumble on Oct. 15.
