BRADFORD, Pa.— Franciscan University's Lady Baron volleyball team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to take on conference opponent the Lady Panthers. Franciscan fell to Bradford 3-2, leaving the Lady Barons with an overall season standing of 6-10 and 1-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
"I am extremely proud of the way the team came back and played in the second pair of games," said head coach Kelly Herrmann. "The girls totally dominated the third and fourth games. We played well, we didn't get the win, but it was a good match."
The Lady Barons fell to the Lady Panthers in games one and two, losing 17-25 and 22-25, but they came back strong in the third and fourth, beating Pitt-Bradford 25-12 and 25-14. Despite the strong comeback, the Lady Barons lost in game five with a close score of 15-17.
Coach Herrmann noted particularly good playing performances on the day by Anna Cain, setter Amy O'Keefe, and Teresa Hess.
"Theresa was one key player who came off the bench and played back row," noted Coach Herrmann. "She did a great job communicating."
"Anna Cain has been tremendously consistent this season," noted Coach Herrmann. Cain had only two errors and led with 20 kills, followed by Meg Kay with 13 and Alyssa Wappes with 10. O'Keefe led in assists, with a total of 37, in addition to having 13 digs. Other key players with impressive digs were Nicole Henson, with 24, Wappes with 21, Maria Prezzia with 14, and Kay with 13.
Jackie Zucco had one block solo and two block assists. Cain tallied four block assists, Prezzia added three, Zucco and Wappes each had two, and Kay added one.
The Lady Barons play again on Oct. 8, at home against La Roche College, beginning at 2 p.m.
