Lady Baron Tennis Defeated by Titans

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—The Franciscan University Lady Baron tennis team hosted the Westminster College Titans at Belleview Park Tuesday evening. The Lady Barons, affiliated with the Alleghany Collegiate Mountain Conference, lost to Westminster, a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 9-0.

"They [Westminster] were just a little bit stronger and the points went their way," said head coach Jenna Lynch. "They hit the ball a little deeper, placed it a little better, and moved a little quicker."

Going into extended play twice, No. 4 singles seed Mary O'Brien had the longest match of the day and played for over an hour and twenty minutes; both sets went into extended play, and she lost 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4).

"Mary attacked the ball and she was aggressive," said assistant coach Jillian Kizewski. "She showed a lot of hustle and determination, and she got closer to a win than anybody else."

Despite the sweep during the last home match of the season, Lynch is optimistic about the AMCC Championship; this is the first year the Lady Barons have been eligible for postseason play as a Division III team.

"We should take it. The only conference match we lost [this season] was against Penn State Behrend, and it was our first match," Lynch said. "I believe the girls have improved enough to give them a really good match, and I think that they'll bring it home."

Franciscan University heads into the AMCC Championship with the second-best record in the conference, 7-1; Penn State Behrend enters postseason undefeated, 8-0. The Lady Barons will have their first shot at the AMCC title on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pa.
