Box Score St. Clairsville, Ohio—Too much rain on their home fields sent Franciscan University's soccer teams to St. Clairsville to challenge University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for doubleheader conference play Saturday afternoon. The Bradford Panthers defeated the Barons 4-1 and the Lady Barons 2-1.
With a Bradford goal coming early in the game, the Baron offense responded quickly as freshman Mark Allen scored for the Barons fifteen minutes into the game off a perfectly passed corner kick from Joe Krilich.
With a few injuries sidelining some of the Barons and consecutive fouls around the 20-minute mark, Bradford took the opportunity to tally two more goals, leaving the field 3-1 at the half.
"The Barons fought hard today, even when they were losing," said assistant coach Billy Herrmann. "The men had a hard time getting the ball deep into the Panther's end of the field, and the injuries and extreme winds did not make the game any easier."
A final goal was scored by Bradford's Jake Karavitch in the second half to wrap up the game, 4-1. The Barons now sit 2-11 overall, and 1-5 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.
The Lady Barons followed the Baron loss with tight defense to keep Bradford down 1-0 at the end of the first half. Jordan Byrley earned the Lady Baron goal with an assist by Jackie Lon.
The second half showed little Lady Baron offense as Bradford tallied 10 shots to Franciscan's one.
"The Panthers had the ball on our side of the field about 90 percent of the time during the second half of the game," said Coach Herrmann. "The women worked really hard during the first half, but they had a hard time keeping up the momentum into the second half."
The Lady Barons now sit 6-7 overall, and 2-4 in the AMCC.
The Franciscan University soccer teams travel to Mt. Aloysius College on Wednesday, Oct. 19, for its next conference game. The Lady Barons are slated to begin play at 2 p.m., with the Barons following at 4 p.m.
