MARIETTA, Ohio—The Lady Baron volleyball team traveled to Marietta College on Saturday for a tri-match versus Wilmington College and Marietta. Franciscan University shutout Wilmington 3-0 in its first match (25-21, 25-19, 25-20), while Marietta defeated Franciscan in match two, 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 10-25).
"We played well in the first match," said head coach Kelly Herrmann. "Anna [Cain] really controlled the net while she was in. Everyone hustled and communicated really well, and it was just a good, complete game."
Cain led the Lady Barons in the first match with 12 kills, while Teresa Hess pitched in with eight. Amy O'Keefe continues to be the leading assist-getter for the Franciscan, recording another 25 to add to her team-high season total. Nicole Henson led the defensive with 22 digs.
"In the second match, we tried some new things," added Herrmann. "We wanted to get some people in who haven't played as much, and we wanted to work on some things so everyone is really well prepared going into our final conference games. I thought we played pretty well the first two games of that match, but by the third game I think we were just running out of steam."
Taking on Marietta it was Cain who again led the offense for the Lady Barons with seven kills. O'Keefe pitched in with 15 assists and Henson recorded 21 digs; Alyssa Wappes tallied 11, and Maria Prezzia adding nine for the defense.
"Overall it was a really good day for us," continued Herrmann. "Defensively we played really well, and we hustled very well."
The Lady Barons now stand at 9-11 on the season and 2-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Franciscan's next match is a conference match at La Roche College on Tuesday, Oct. 18, beginning at 7 p.m.
