Box Score CRESSON, Pa.—The Franciscan University Lady Baron tennis team traveled to Mt. Aloysius College Tuesday afternoon for its final Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference match. The Lady Barons won 7-2, defending their winning streak and closing out the season's regular play with a record of 7-1.
"I am so proud of the girls and the way they have continued to develop as players," said head coach Jenna Lynch. "I can't wait to see what God has in store for them on and off the court as we finish out our season."
In singles play, No. 2 seed Alanna Murray won 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 4 seed was Kristina Godnick, who won in extended play, 7-5, 6-3. Mary O' Brien was moved to the No. 5 seed, where she won 6-0, 6-4, and freshmen Hannah Pettit finished out the regular season undefeated, winning the No. 6 seed 6-0, 6-2. Jen Winkle, the No. 1 seed, and No. 3 seed Leann Roggensack were both defeated.
The doubles round was a sweep for the Lady Barons. The No. 1 doubles team—Jen Winkle and Alanna Murray—won 8-5.
"Alanna Murray and Jen Winkle have really become a great doubles team," said Lynch. "They communicated well today and worked together in strategizing their points. Not having Jen [who will graduate in the spring] will be a huge loss for the team next season."
Leann Roggensack and Mary O'Brien took the No. 2 doubles seed in a close match, winning 8-6. Freshmen Jessica Bestgen moved into the doubles round, partnering with Kaylene Godnick as the No. 3 doubles team, and the pair won 8-4.
The Lady Barons hold an overall record of 9-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference. The only AMCC team with a better record is undefeated Penn State Behrend, who the Lady Barons will see again at the AMCC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 15.
"I will be encouraging the team to recommit to an even higher level of intensity as we close out the season," Lynch noted.
The Lady Barons have just one day to rest before they head to Geneva College for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.
