Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Franciscan University soccer teams traveled to Buffalo on Saturday for an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with the D'Youville Spartans. Despite both teams playing hard, they each lost by just one goal: the men losing 2-1 and the women falling 1-0.
Assistant coach Billy Herrmann said that the men's team showed some heart in their loss. "We continued to fight the entire game," Herrmann said. "We got some strong play from the hometown boys from Buffalo, Jessie [Saltarelli] and Brian [Bobak]. We had some good chances, but we just couldn't finish."
The Barons were down 2-0 in the second half when senior Tommy Allen narrowed the deficit to just one with a goal in the 63rd minute off of an assist from Richard Pankus. But it wasn't enough.
The D'Youville women were able to score midway through the first half, and according to Herrmann, they had some chances to tie the score but could not put the ball in the back of the net.
"For a short time after the goal [the women's team] let down a bit, but after that we played good defense and got some chances from Jordan [Cyrly] and Julia [Cocozza]. We spent a lot of time tracking back on defense and then having a quick build up into their end, but we couldn't tie it up. I'm proud of their efforts—especially the seniors," Herrmann added.
The Franciscan men fall to 2-13 on the season and 1-7 in the AMCC, while the women drop to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the AMCC. The two teams will host the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
