STEUBENVILLE—The Franciscan University of Steubenville Lady Baron volleyball team welcomed the La Roche College Red Hawks into Finnegan Fieldhouse for the second time this season, and just like the first time the two teams met up, Franciscan dominated their way to a 3-0 victory.
"It's nice that our team played well enough today where we could substitute freely," said head coach Kelly Herrmann. "Everybody was able to play and we had some very capable subs."
The Lady Barons played so well in fact that not one of the three games were close, as they did not let their opponents score more than 13 points in a game, winning the first game 25-9, and the final two by a score of 25-13.
"Nicole Henson played very well today," Herrmann noted. "She passed and served very well." Henson led the defense with 13 digs over the three games.
The offensive category leaders went along with the season's trend, as Meg Kay and Anna Cain led the Lady Barons in kills with nine and seven, respectively, while Amy O'Keefe once again was the team leader in assists with 20 over the three games.
Every single player on the Lady Baron roster had at least one dig in the game.
Coach Herrmann also noted how special it is to be able to play games at the Finnegan Fieldhouse, after playing games off campus for so long. The Lady Barons have been playing games in the FFH since 2009, but before that they held all their home games off campus. She mentioned the hard work of Franciscan employee Dave Fatula and his Human Resources staff in making these home games possible.
"The gym was packed today," Herrmann emphasized, "and if we were off campus, half those people would not make it to the match. It was a wonderful atmosphere and [has been] a great experience."
Despite La Roche being a fellow member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, this match-up did not count towards either team's conference standings.
The Lady Barons, now 7-10 and 1-3 in the conference, travel to Mt. Aloysius College on Wednesday for a conference match-up with the Mounties. "That will be a tough match," Herrmann added. "We have to play tough, and we have to win."
