Lady Barons Earn First Victory of the Season

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Franciscan University of Steubenville's Lady Baron basketball team broke its six-game losing streak Wednesday evening, beating the Mount Aloysius Mounties 73-64. A long sought-after win, this leaves the Lady Barons 1-6 on the season and 1-1 on the conference.

"The girls really got it done tonight," said head coach Luke Heusel. "This game was about the women running the offense well, and playing good defense against a good team. I am very proud of the team's effort and poise. It was a good victory."

The Lady Barons gained the lead from the first basket (two free throws by senior Christine Conrad), and didn't let go the entire game despite the Mounties' best efforts to close the gap in scores. The Lady Barons ended the first half 36-28.

"Amy O'Keefe and Christine Conrad both had a great game, but it was truly a team effort tonight," noted Coach Heusel. "The girls took care of the basketball, and it takes a whole team to set up for the shots."

O'Keefe scored a total of 15 shots on the night – nine field goals, three three-pointers, and three free throws. Conrad also was a high-scorer of the night with four field goals, one three-pointer, and nine free throws. Sophomore Hannah Flanagan had a standout performance totaling 11 total shots – four field goals, three three-pointers, and four free throws.

The Lady Barons proved strong in defense, making 31 defensive rebounds and nine offensives for a total of 40 rebounds.

The Lady Barons continue conference play on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Medaille College.
