Barons Caught Flatfooted Verus Behrend

Box Score

ERIE, Pa.—Coming off the heels of a win against Penn State Altoona Wednesday night, the Franciscan University Baron basketball team looked to add a second win as they traveled to Penn State Behrend on Saturday. The first bucket of the game was a three-pointer by Thomas Kleinschnitz, but that was the biggest lead the Barons would see as they went on to lose 75-46.

Five minutes into the first half the score was tied at 10, but the Lions used a 19-5 run to push the game out of reach. According to head coach Sean Donovan, it was a lack of defensive intensity and the inability to execute their offensive game plan that hurt the Barons.

"Defensively we were just caught flatfooted," Donovan said. "Our plan was to attack the basket and we just didn't execute our game plan. [Behrend] is so disciplined defensively, they're one of those teams that you can't get caught doing things like that."

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference scoring leader Kleinschnitz led the way offensively for the Barons as he played 39 of the 40 game time minutes and scored a game-high of 18 points. Co-captain Connor Flanagan was the only other Baron in double-digits as he added 11.

The Barons struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 36 percent from the field compared to Behrend's 50 percent on the afternoon.

"Penn State Behrend is a great team, and we were expecting nothing but their A-game—we just didn't execute," Donovan noted.

The Barons, now 3-18 overall and 3-13 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, will play their final road game of the season against conference-leading La Roche College this Wednesday, February 16, at 8 p.m.
