Box Score STEUBENVILLE—Saturday afternoon was the final game of the season for Franciscan University of Steubenville's Lady Barons basketball team against the D'Youville College Lady Spartans. Playing an inconsistent game, the Lady Barons handed the Lady Spartans a 69-49 victory.
The Lady Barons now finish their season with an overall record of 3-20 and are 2-16 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
"We played poorly in the first half," said head coach Luke Heusel. "We need to work on not letting the score get too ahead of us." The Lady Barons headed into the locker room 22 points behind the Lady Spartans. "We can't always climb out of deep holes."
The Lady Barons at first stepped it up the second half, adding 30 points as opposed to their 19 in the first half. Leading on the boards was sophomore guard Christine Conrad with 13 points and six rebounds. Hannah Flanagan and senior Marian Weber each added eight points and eight rebounds on the day.
"The seniors played great tonight," noted Coach Heusel. "Marian Weber and Sarah Viancourt played with intensity and heart both halves, as they have all year."
Coach Heusel made a point to note the third senior, Caitlin Donovan: "Caitlin is the heart and soul of the team. She has always been the absolute leader. Even after her injury, she was at practices and continuing to lead from the front. All of the seniors are a great blessing." Donovan was given the honor of starting the game, but quickly sidelined due to her injuries.
Playing their last game after four years on the team, the three Lady Baron seniors finished their careers with some impressive statistics. Weber finished her career holding the second place record for Franciscan in total points with 380. Weber also holds Franciscan's second place record for field goals and free throws made, making 150 and 80, respectively. The senior guard also impressively holds the first place records for the rebounds (512), assists (117), and steals (125).
Donovan, a team captain, finishes her collegiate basketball career with a total of 178 points scored overall. She holds the second place record in assists with 84 total.
Sarah Viancourt finished with 214 points overall and holds the third place record in field goals made and rebounds. She successfully made 80 field goals and got 200 rebounds during her four years.
Though the final game of their season was a loss, the Lady Barons definitely have shown improvement throughout the season. And though the team loses three vital members, its newest players show great promise.
