Barons Shutout Bethany

Box Score

BETHANY, W. Va.—The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's tennis team brought their record above the .500 mark Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 shutout victory over Bethany College.

Head coach Curtis Allen said that it was tough to pick out a few standouts on the day, as his whole team played solid tennis. "We have a very good team this year," Allen noted. "We're still young, and it's still a building year, but we have the talent."

Doubles partners Patrick Wilmot and Jack Bruce won their doubles match 8-0. Franciscan's two other doubles, Leonel Lacayo and Luke Merry, and Paul Jarznka and Brian Robau, also won their matches 8-1 and 9-7, respectively.

Lacayo, the Barons top seeded singles player, played the most competitive singles match of the afternoon with a close win of 7-6(4), 7-5. In the other five singles matches, all dominated by Franciscan, no Bethany player got more than three points in a game.

The Barons, now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, will travel to Latrobe, Pa., this Sunday to take on St. Vincent College. Allen commented that those matches will not come as easily as Wednesday's. "We're going to have our hands full," he said, "but we should be okay. [We know we] have what it takes to be good, it's just a matter of focusing on what we're doing, and tennis is so mental. It should be fun."
