Box Score LATROBE, Pa.—Franciscan University's Baron tennis team had a satisfying victory against the St. Vincent College Bearcats Sunday afternoon. With the Bearcats dominating the doubles round, the Barons came back to win six of the seven singles matches for a 6-3 win. Franciscan now sits 3-1 overall on the season.
The doubles team of freshmen Paul Jarzynka and Brian Robau clinched the only doubles win for Franciscan with an 8-4 victory. In a singles sweep, the Barons toppled the Bearcats by a large margin. No. 1 seed Leonel Lacayo defeated Nathan Walch 6-3, 6-4; Jarzynka continued his success with a 6-2, 6-4 win; Robau also stepped up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory; Luke Merry won 6-4, 6-2; and No. 5 seed Patrick Wilmot defeated Shawn Lehman by the most narrow margin of 6-2, 7-6(3).
"The guys all played really well tonight. It was a good win," commented head coach Curtis Allen. Though the win was a good one, Allen notes that true effort really had to be put forth by the Barons. "The guys definitely had to fight tonight. They definitely battled. Out of the three victories [this season], it was definitely the toughest win so far."
It's only game four into the season, so the Barons have time to improve even more upon their skills. The team steps on the courts again this Wednesday, traveling to Marietta College March 30. The match begins at 3 p.m.
