Franciscan Softball Stumbles in Doubleheader

STEUBENVILLE—Franciscan University's Lady Baron softball team found themselves on the wrong side of an one-sided offensive performance Thursday afternoon, falling 13-0 and 10-1 to the visiting Lions of Penn State Beaver.

"Despite the score," said head coach Terry Leighty, "I'm encouraged. We are getting better. We're young. Once we get some more experience, we'll be making more of those important plays and these games will be closer."

In game one, Franciscan stayed with the Lions for the first two innings as pitcher Lara Plumlee performed well. But 10 runs by the Lions in the third inning sent the Lady Barons reeling. Bree Atrium came in and pitched the rest of the game, giving up the remaining three runs. Amanda Ruwart received the sole hit for the Barons with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Barons saw a small improvement in game two, managing to get six hits. Ruwart, Rebecca Peters, Kelly Cole, Erin Gulick, Bridget Cooke, and Daniella Pillar all registered singles. Plumlee went the distance, giving nine earned runs off of 18 hits. Megan Milstead scored the lone Lady Baron run in the bottom of the fifth to finalize the score at 10-1.

Franciscan now sits 1-15 overall on the season and returns to conference play this Saturday for Kuzma Community Day, taking on the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on the campus of Franciscan University.
