Winning Streak Continues for Baron Tennis

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—The Franciscan University of Steubenville's Baron tennis team gave the fans a special treat Saturday afternoon with a resounding victory over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats.  The Barons crushed the competition, going undefeated in doubles and singles, 9-0. It was the best birthday present head coach Curtis Allen could ask for.

"I lucked out with some really talented, experienced incoming freshmen players this season," said Allen. "It is great to watch them play so well."

In doubles, Paul Jarzynka and Brian Robau blew away Toma's Hric and Nayid Pourarian with an 8-1 win. This first doubles victory was followed by 8-0 wins for both second and third Baron doubles teams: Leonel Lacayo and Luke Merry, and Partick Wilmot and Jack Bruce.

The winning spirit of the day carried over to the singles round, as the Barons shutout Greensburg by a landslide.  No.1 seed Leonel Lacayo defeated Toma's Hic 6-0, 6-1; with some killer serves Paul Jarzynka toppled Navid Pourarian 6-1, 6-0; Brian Robau had a 6-1, 6-1 win; Luke Merry shut down the competition 6-0, 6-0; Patrick Wilmot pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 win; and Jack Bruce finished off the streak with a solid 6-0, 6-0 victory.

"We had a good team performance today," noted Paul Jarzynca, "Tomorrow's match against D'Youville should give us a little more competition. They have a really good top player going up against our No.1 seed Leonel Lacayo, but we're confident and hopefully we'll sweep them."

The Barons look to continue their wins tomorrow, hosting D'Youville College at 1 p.m.
