Box Score STEUBENVILLE—The Lady Baron tennis team continued its victory sweep on Sunday, defeating Penn State Altoona 7-2 on Franciscan University's home courts. It was a different caliber of play, according the head coach Jenna Lynch, but the Lady Barons accepted the home opener challenge to push their conference standing to 4-1.
"Overall the girls played well," noted Lynch. "The girls had some wind to battle and faced a different caliber of play today."
Coming off of a University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg shutout the day before, the Lady Barons had no day to rest.
"The girls took a few games to warm up and get comfortable on the court, but the girls were aggressive at the net and overall played some great tennis."
The Lady Barons earned victories for the No. 1 and 2 seeds in the doubles round, defeating Altoona 8-3 in both matches. The Lady Lions took an 8-2 victory over Franciscan at the No. 3 spot.
Franciscan went on to defeat Altoona in all singles matches except one, with strong victories by No. 1 seed Jen Winkle (6-4, 6-1), No. 2 seed Alanna Murray (6-2, 6-0), Leann Roggensack at the No. 3 spot (6-3, 6-2), a 7-5, 7-5 win by Kristina Godnick at No. 4, and Hannah Pettit as No. 6 seed (6-2, 6-2).
"I am happy with the way the girls played today," added Lynch.
The Lady Barons now stand 4-2 overall on the season and 4-1 within the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The team heads to Bethany College on Tuesday, Sept. 20, for a non-conference beginning at 4 p.m.
