Soccer Falls to Waynesburg

STEUBENVILLE—The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's soccer team was coming off of its season opening victory as they hosted Waynesburg University on a hot and muggy Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Lady Barons, they could not make it two straight wins as they were downed by the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets, 3-1. In the first game of the afternoon, the Baron men were shut-out by Waynesburg in their season-opener, 5-0.

"Waynesburg is a better opponent then we faced in the first two games," said FUS coach Bill Herrmann about the women's match. "Our focus was to come out and get the first goal and that didn't happen for us."

Waynesburg's first goal of the game came in the fourth minute on a miscommunication between Franciscan goalkeeper Lauren Koath and a defender, something that coach Herrmann said brought down the Lady Barons' spirits. The Lady Jackets made it a two goal lead when they found the back of the net again in the 27th minute.

But the Lady Barons came out strong in the second half and cut the deficit to one when freshman Ashley Ruttencutter fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box that went over WU's goalkeeper's stretching fingertips. Unfortunately for the Barons, that's all the offense they could muster up and Waynesburg got an insurance goal in the 75th minute to secure their 3-1 victory.

As for the men, the 5-0 defeat was seen by Coach Herrmann as a good learning experience for the young Franciscan players. "It was a good game for the freshman players and new players to see what this level is going to be like. Some of the mistakes that we made today were made because of how young our team is."

The loss drops the Lady Barons record to 1-1-0 and the men drop to 0-1-0 for the year. The men are back in action on Tuesday when they host Penn State-New Kensington at 4pm. The Lady Barons are not on the field again until next Saturday when both they and the men travel to Muskingum.
