Box Score GREENSBURG, Pa.— Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference preseason Player of the Year David Palmer demonstrated why he was chosen for that prestigious award on Wednesday night. The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats used a dominating 18 point, 20 rebound performance from Palmer to take down the Franciscan University Barons, 65-50.
According to FUS head coach John Lamanna, rebounding was the sole difference in the game.
"Our inability to finish a defensive play with a rebound puts us in jams like these, and when we start doing that, we will see a difference," he said.
The Barons were out-rebounded by the Bobcats 54-28, enabling Greensburg to score 21 second-chance points.
One area where the Barons have struggled this season is turnovers, and tonight they improved on that greatly. Franciscan had just 15 turnovers to Greensburg's 23. They were able to capitalize on their forced turnovers as well, scoring 26 points off of turnovers compared to just seven from Greensburg.
"We did a better job taking care of the ball tonight, and I was happy to see that," added Lamanna, "but we can always improve."
Franciscan got the majority of its offensive contribution from freshman Nolan Albrecht off the bench, as he came in to score a game-high 19 and also record eight rebounds. He helped the Barons out-score Greensburg in points in the paint, 30-22.
The Barons, still winless on the season, will host Hilbert on Saturday. Lamanna says the team will focus on the areas that hurt them the most in tonight's game.
"We're going to have to focus on boxing out, and finishing a defensive play," he said.
Saturday's game tips off at 3 p.m. at the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
