Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Lady Baron basketball team was just three points away from its second win of the season versus conference foe D'Youville College Sunday afternoon. Coming off a loss the night before against Hilbert College, the Lady Barons rallied for their second game of the weekend but ultimately fell 70-67 to D'Youville.
"We played well," said head coach Luke Heusel. "We had a tough loss yesterday, but the girls really came back and played hard. There was no feeling sorry for ourselves. We ran the offense much better this game. We were getting good shots; we just couldn't knock them down."
The overall shooting percentage of the game was 26 percent for field goals, 34.8 percent for three pointers, and 75 for free throws.
Leading Franciscan offensively were Lacey Huck and Hannah Flanagan, scoring 21 and 19 respectively, with Flanagan sinking four impressive three-pointers. Flanagan stepped up as point guard while the usual starter, Christine Conrad, was out due to an injury.
"Flanagan handled the ball and ran the offense really well," noted coach Heusel. "She made some really helpful shots in the second half."
Louise Craig scored nine points, and Amy O'Keefe seven. Kristin Belleque moved up to a starting position this game and scored seven points.
"Craig hit some very nice shots on the offensive side," said Heusel. "Lacey Huck played a more balanced game and really contributed with some nice shots inside."
Another player who stood out today was Allyson Cooney.
"Cooney is a player who's always good on defense," noted Coach Heusel. "She does things on defense that always gets us turnovers and gets us back the ball."
O'Keefe and Huck also led in rebounds, 12 and 11, respectively.
The Lady Barons finished the first half just five points behind D'Youville, at 32-27, and kept the Lady Spartans close in their sights the entire second half, closing the gap steadily.
Franciscan is now 1-11 on the season and stand 1-5 overall in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Next to face the Lady Barons at the Finnegan Fieldhouse is Penn State Altoona on Wednesday, Jan. 11, beginning at 8 p.m.
