Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - A sweet start to senior day turned sour for
Lady Baron soccer as the team let in two unanswered goals in a 2
– 1 loss to D'Youville College.
D'Youville created a good scoring chance off the start but the
Lady Baron's woke up after the shot sailed wide. The FUS midfield
led a cohesive offensive attack that saw a number of prime scoring
chances. The team also had to overcome a number of injuries
including their leading scorer, Ashley Ruttencutter.
"I'm really proud of my girls. They really played a high level
of soccer, and as a coach I couldn't ask for more," head coach
Johann Marin said.
Forward Jordan Byrley's goal in the sixteenth minute put FUS up
1 – 0. Despite the early lead, the Lady Baron's weren't able
to capitalize on any of their other chances, including three shots
that hit the post or crossbar.
"It was clear today that we were the better team, however, goals
win matches," Marin said. "The upright isn't moving. So it's our
job to put the ball past the goalkeeper, and we didn't."
Both D'Youville goals came off of defensive breakdowns that
allowed the Lady Spartan's one on one chances with senior
goalkeeper, Lauren Koath.
The goals, and eventually the loss, meant a tough but emotional
senior day for Koath, the lone senior on the team. Koath's day only
got harder when she was hit in her already injured right quad
during the D'Youville's second goal.
"As soon as I got hit I knew I still wanted to finish the game.
This game means a lot to me and I only have so many games left in
my career," Koath said. "I just wanted to stay on the field and
inspire my team to come back."
Despite the loss, both Koath and Marin remain confident and
happy with the team's overall progression this season.
"It was heart wrenching but I smile when I see this
opportunities gained," Marin said. "I came from a team last year
that was not getting these opportunities, and they've worked on it
and they've blossomed."
The loss brings the Lady Barons to 3-9-3 on the season and 1-3-2
in conference. Next, they travel to Penn St.-Altoona on Saturday,
October 17 at 4 pm.
