Box Score It was a different day but the same result for Lady Baron soccer
as FUS fell to Pitt-Bradford, 1 – 0, in its second to last
game of the season. Franciscan dominated the possession but as has
become common for the women this season, they were unable to
convert on a number of scoring opportunities.
"It's extremely frustrating," head coach Johann Marin said. "I'm
running out of things to tell people, because I'm telling the
truth. We are maintaining possession of the game, we are getting
opportunities and we are not able to convert."
Most of the Lady Barons' chances came in the first half of the
match with a clear advantage in ball possession and help from a
strong wind at their back. Franciscan wasn't able to make good use
of the wind, however, and when the sides switched at the half, the
Lady Panthers used the weather to their advantage.
"They changed their tactic to a long-ball game. They did have
very fast athletes and they were using that to their advantage,"
Marin said about Pitt-Bradford's use of the wind.
Eventually the Lady Panthers broke through the FUS defense late
in the second half to score the game's only goal. The goal marked
the one blemish on an otherwise strong game by senior Lady Baron
goalkeeper Lauren Koath.
While the season's theme of consistent possession without goals
has made for a frustrating one at times, Marin said he knows why
the problem exists and believes it is one that his young team can
fix for the future.
"We actually grew much faster than we expected this year," Marin
said. "So in respect to getting into these goal scoring situations,
it's unfamiliar to my girls."
Marin added that most of the pre-season and in-season practices
have focused around building their offensive structure and creating
chances, but not specifically on finishing.
"Goal scoring will be something we will be working on from the
beginning of the season next year," Marin said. "Because if we are
creating these opportunities then we need to be able to finish
them."
The loss puts Franciscan at 3-11-3 on the season and 1-5-2 in
conference. The loss also officially eliminated the team from
playoff contention.
The Lady Barons will play their last game of the season at home
against Mt. Aloysius College on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m.
