Lady Baron Soccer Finishes Season With a Win

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- The Franciscan women's soccer team beat Mount Aloysius for the second year in a row, winning 4-1 in their final game of the season. The Lady Barons finish their season at 4-11-3 overall and 2-5-2 in conference.

"We've been blessed with so many young girls stepping up to play at a high level," Head Coach Johann Marin said about how his team played. "Katie Roemer is an outstanding worker. Her work ethic is ridiculous; she does not stop. Her success in today's game was well deserved."

Within the first eleven minutes of the game, freshman Lauren Noce scored with an assist from sophomore standout Ashley Ruttencutter. Ruttencutter put in an accurate cross, finding Noce's feet for the goal.

After taking the lead the Lady Barons remained composed and aggressive. Within the last ten minutes of the first half, sophomore Katie Roemer and Ruttencutter tacked two more goals onto the scoreboard for the Lady Barons.

Assisted by sophomore forward Jordan Byrley, Roemer scored in the thirty-sixth minute, and was followed by an unassisted shot from outside the 18-yard box by Ruttencutter.

Mt. Aloysius narrowed the gap with an unassisted goal on a breakaway, ending the first half 3-1.

"Mount Aloysius came very prepared," Marin said. "We expect to see good things from them in the future. I would like to commend them for their efforts today, they have some very good players."

In the twenty-ninth minute of the second half, Roemer scored her second goal of the day with an assist from freshman Mary Duran.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Koath kept Mount Aloysius out of the net, taking a hit in the first half when a Mount Aloysius forward charged the ball.

"I am so proud of Lauren, watching her play this evening was very gratifying," Marin said. "She's an amazing athlete, role-model, and leader for our girls."

Koath is the only senior on the team and while the Lady Baron's will miss out on the conference playoffs, Marin is excited for his young team and what it will be capable of in the seasons to come.

"I have more time to spend with the girls. An entire team of returning sophomores and freshman gives me a few more years with some of these girls," Marin said. "We have something special here."

After their 4-1 win, Athletic Director Chris Ledyard spoke with the girls about their season.

"Winning is the goal, but not the most important goal," Ledyard said. "Develop yourselves as individuals, as a team, and as a program. What you have is golden."
