Lady Baron Offense Explodes in First AMCC Victory

Box Score

HAMBURG, N.Y.— The Franciscan University Lady Baron soccer team secured their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season against Hilbert College with a score of 5-1.

"It was a really outstanding game from back to front as these girls really played well today and they definitely rose to the occasion," Franciscan head coach Johann Marin said.

Although the weather was very cold and windy the Lady Barons managed to secure five goals and hold the Hawks one.

Julia Cocozza, who just recently returned to play from an injury, acquired her first goal of the season. Katie Roemer got two goals on the day and Jordan Byrley and Calene Dougherty both added one each to the total score.

"These are all players who have found themselves in goal scoring positions on countless occasions and have now managed to reap the rewards of their hard work," Marin said.

The game today displayed an entire full team effort as most of the goals resulted from a built attack resulting in four of the five goals coming off of assists.

"We were very effective as a team Hilbert had no real chances to break us down," Marin said. "We dominated the game with possession and we were able to just get into scoring position and finish."

Franciscan was up at halftime 2-0 but Marin said that they came back for the second half ready to start from scratch, settle down and pay attention to details.

The Lady Baron defensive side of the field continued to do their duty in the game and did not have to fight back as many counter attacks from the Hawks as they have in recent games. Goalkeeper and captain Lauren Koath had a strong day in goal.

"Today the offense finished on our chances and our defense continued to play well," Marin said. "My offense took the pressure off of my defense by scoring goals."

With a team that has been plagued by injury and illness Marin said that today he got to use all but one of his substitutes making it an even more well-rounded full team victory.

"Overall it was a very combined team effort that I just see as a huge reward for all the hard work these girls have been putting in," Marin said. "We hope to continue to carry this quality of play and spirit forward into next week and the rest of the season."

The Lady Barons look for another conference win when they take on the La Roche College Redhawks at home on Oct. 9 with the game set to start at 2p.m.
