Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Oh.— The Franciscan University women's soccer team tied for the third time this season as their game against La Roche College went into double overtime and finished with a score of 0-0.
In their fifth overtime and third double overtime game of the year, the Lady Barons continued to work on keeping their formation and maintaining composure despite pressure from the Lady Redhawks in the defensive third of the field. While unable to convert scoring opportunities, the team maintained an aggressive approach to the game.
"The girls showed great courage and discipline," FUS head coach Johann Marin said, adding, "Today they rose above all that was placed against them."
With several players suffering from injuries, the team was forced to shift the lineup and replace four of their usual starters, but Marin said that in spite of this, the girls adjusted well.
"You can barely tell the difference. The girls did really great today. Every single player performed their role and function," Marin said, adding that he was particularly proud of the entire defensive line for preventing shots on goal. Among these were players Hannah Castree, Mallory Garthwaite, Monica Dawyot, Lauren Stearman and goalkeeper Lauren Koath.
"The game has to belong to the defense today because we didn't score," Marin said. "However, we were able to get in front of the goal and break down the other team's defense. I also felt like we did keep the ball well today."
As the season progresses, Marin said that the girls will focus on getting goals and continuing to play an aggressive game.
"We're going for consistency right now because we have something that is working. These girls are really doing extraordinary things. We hope to continue moving up from here," Marin said.
The Lady Barons are now 3-8-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. They face D'Youville College at home this Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m.
