Better Consistency and More Offensive Balance for Women's Basketball

Box Score

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Franciscan University women's basketball team played it's first of two games in the weekend long Nan Nichols Classic sponsored by The College of Wooster on Saturday against non-conference opponent Wooster. FUS fell to the Fighting Scots with a final score of 67-52.

Despite the loss head coach Suzy Delaney said that the Lady Barons are moving toward their goal of staying consistent for the whole game.

"We were more consistent throughout this game in both our defense and offense compared to our last game even though it might not show in the stats," Delaney said.

Franciscan had a 33 percent shooting average but Delaney said that the goal of the offense is to get good looks, a high shot percentage and get to the foul line all of which the team improved upon.

"I was pleased with the shots we were getting and those shots are going to fall," Delaney said.

Two players who were able to get their shots to fall were returning sophomores Lacy Huck and Amy O'Keefe. Huck had 18 points and 7 rebounds and O'Keefe had 16 points and 6 rebounds on the game.

Sophomore Helen Raines also showed a good all around performance with 12 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. Delaney said Raines gave the defense a nice spark to run off of.

"Helen Raines gave a solid effort and played really well on defense," Delaney said. "On the whole our defense today played better today with a higher intensity, better position, consistently helping each other out and going for steals."

With improvement all around, the young FUS team will play their second game in the Nan Nichols Classis on Sunday Nov. 18 against non-conference opponent SUNY Geneseo at 1 p.m.

"We're playing a good team tomorrow," Delaney said. "It's going to be a big challenge and a good chance for us to play against some good competition and keep improving and keep working toward our conference season."
