Barons Fight Through Inexperience in Loss to Oberlin

Box Score

Steubenville, Ohio - Baron basketball continued to try and overcome injuries and inexperience in a 69 - 57 loss to Oberlin College at Finnegan Fieldhouse. The Barons, down to 9 healthy players, 7 of whom are new to the program, came out flat and despite a stronger second half, couldn't overcome a 14 point first half deficit.

"We're still trying to learn and figure out our groove," Head Coach John Lamanna said. "The pieces are here but we're still learning each other. Every game is new for us."

As has often been the case this season, Franciscan showcased flashes of solid play throughout an inconsistent performance. The Barons managed to force 23 turnovers and had two players score over 15 points, but also made a number of mental mistakes on both sides of court.

"That's what we're working on; trying to increase our consistency of play," said head coach John Lamanna. "Its a youth thing. Its a lack of leadership on the floor. So we're trying to figure out who's gonna step up within that program."

Two players who stepped up in the scoring column were forward Joe Rine and guard Justin Horstman. Rine scored 17 points and led the team with 7 rebounds while Horstman scored a game-high 20 points.

While injuries and youth continue to provide an added challenge for the Barons, Coach Lamanna is confident that his team will continue to fight through it, and continue to improve.

"I feel really good about how we'll be able to respond," Lamanna said. "This group of guys has always responded to every challenge we've had this year and its gonna come for us."

The Barons next game is at home on November 28 at 8 pm as the FUS takes on Penn State Altoona.
