FUS Women Win Second Straight Game, Become 2-0 In Conference

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Franciscan University's Women's Basketball team beat Hilbert College 53-43, winning their second consecutive game. The girls are now undefeated in conference play.

"As always, I want the girls to be happy with their win, but continue to work and move forward," Head Coach Suzy Delaney said.

Coming off of their first conference win against Penn State-Altoona, FUS started the game with an intense attitude and a desire to win. Sophomore Lacy Huck scored within the first minute of the game, setting the tempo for what would be a face-paced game.

"Our guards did a good job handling the pressure throughout the first half," Delaney said.

Hilbert College struggled to keep up early, as Franciscan held the Lady Hawks to 20 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes. Thanks to their solid defense and six rebounds from Huck, FUS went into the half up 27-13.

"We got into some foul trouble in the first half," Coach Delaney said. "We knew that Hilbert College wouldn't keep missing their shots, and they eventually had a nice comeback."

The second half was chaotic but the Franciscan girls kept their composure. Both teams got to the line often, but Franciscan missed thirteen of their foul shots, allowing Hilbert to catch up. Despite their troubles from the line, FUS was able to keep the lead.

"We responded well, and our reactions enabled us to keep moving forward and attain a steady lead throughout the game." Coach Delaney said.

Sophomore guard Helen Raines and freshman guard Monica Dawyot helped Franciscan keep Hilbert at bay, with some key steals and tough defense. Franciscan's efforts proved to be enough, eventually winning 53 - 43.

"Despite the intensity, we didn't let the other team get in our heads," Coach Delaney said. "Monday's game will be a good match up against Bethany College. Our girls aren't satisfied yet. They have an attitude which allows them to keep working."

Monday night FUS will host Bethany College in Finnegan Fieldhouse at 6 pm hoping to continue their winning streak.
