Tennis Team Digs Deep to Secure Victory

Box Score

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Despite the Franciscan University tennis team being without two of its top players, Brian Robau and Leonel Lacayo, it won its nonconference match against Westminster College 5-4 Tuesday afternoon. The Barons are now 3-0 on season and 2-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

"As the season progresses the guys are growing closer to each other to create the type of environment needed to continue to win," said head coach Jeremy Ellis. "The guys realize that it is more than just winning, it is carrying the name of Jesus."

Paul Jarzynka, shifted from No. 2 to No. 1 singles, defeated Westminster's Nathan Huber 6-3, 6-2. Luke Merry, usually the No. 4 singles player stepped up to the No. 2 spot and won 6-3, 6-1. John Shultis, moved up from No. 5 to No. 3, also stepped up to the challenge and won 7-5, 7-5.

The doubles teams also faced the tantalizing challenge of adjusting its caliber of play. The first doubles team, Jarzynka and Merry, won their match 8-3. The second doubles team, John Shultis and Richard Pankus, also earned an 8-4 victory over Westminster.

The Barons next match is a nonconference match versus Bethany College this Thursday at 4 p.m.
