Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Franciscan University tennis team was victorious in its first home match of the season versus University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Saturday afternoon. The Barons record in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference is now 3-0 and 4-0 on the overall season.
"It was a good day for tennis and this is another match won without two of our top players (Leonel Lacayo and John Shultis) playing singles, which continues to show the depth of our team," said head coach Jeremy Ellis.
No. 1 doubles team, Paul Jarzynka and Brian Robau, won their match 8-0 and No. 2 doubles team, Leonel Lacayo and Luke Merry won 8-1.
In singles play Jarzynka stepped up to No. 1 seed from No. 2 and took on the challenge to beat Bradford's Ian Vaughan 6-2, 6-0.
"Paul is player of the week for our team because he had to play up to No. 1 singles twice this week and won dominantly both times," said Ellis.
No. 2 Brian Robau won 6-2, 6-1, with an agile ace as his last serve. Luke Merry defeated Travis Scida, 6-2, 6-3. Richard Pankus won a hard fought match against Charles Fitzpatrick 7-5, 6-2; and John Bruce added to the team's wins by defeating David Kopp 6-4, 6-2.
