Defense Plagues Lady Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Franciscan University pitcher Amanda Ruwart started the day in the circle with three hitless innings to start game one, but struggled in the last four innings as the Lady Barons dropped game one of a doubleheader with Penn State Beaver, 12-4. In game two the Lady Barons continued to struggle and Beaver was victorious, 14-3.

"Obviously we're disappointed that every game we seem to lose focus for one inning and the other team has a big inning," head coach Terry Leighty said. "When we're not perfect, we're in trouble. We commit too many errors, and when we make errors we get in trouble."

The Lady Barons defense struggled in the field as it committed nine errors in game one of the DH and five errors in game two.

The offensive leaders in game one for the Lady Barons were Ruwart and Daniella Pillar. Ruwart went 2-4 with an RBI double and Pillar went a perfect 3-3 with a double and an RBI. In the second game, Mallori Linscomb led the way offensively for Franciscan going 2-3 with a two-RBI double, and Allyson White went 2-2.

"Mallori (Linscomb) hit the ball well and she's starting to wake up now after a slow start," Leighty said. "The last three games have been so much better offensively. We haven't been shut out for three straight games. We're hitting the ball and we're not striking out a whole lot. It goes back to defense."

The Lady Barons will play their third doubleheader in three days when they travel to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg to take on the Lady Bobcats. Game times are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
