Tuesday's Match Was A Confidence Booster

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Franciscan University's Baron tennis team defeated Bethany College 8-1 Tuesday afternoon furthering its undefeated record in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Barons are now 4-0 in the AMCC and 7-1 overall on the season. 

"Today was a good confidence booster," said head coach Jeremy Ellis. "It was another day where everyone had to play up a spot and they continue to impress me with their ability to step up and secure victories." 

The doubles teams set a high standard by starting the match with strong performances. Both the No. 1 doubles team, Paul Jarzynka and Brian Robau, and the No. 2 doubles team, Luke Merry and John Shultis, won their respective matches 8-0. 

The match continued with valuable contributions from all singles players. This week's AMCC player of the week, sophomore Paul Jarzynka, defeated Jared Patrick 6-0, 6-1; Brian Robau won his match versus James Peterson, 6-1, 6-1; John Shultis continued the winning streak by defeating Jared Rogue, 6-0, 6-1; Richard Pankus won against Tyler Rhodes, 6-1, 6-0; and John Bruce defeated Richard Strassgueh, 6-0, 6-1. Luke Merry rounded out the team's victories by securing a win over Dustin Maiolo with a tiebreaker--after two hard fought sets--with scores of 6-1, 5-7, (10-4). 

"We look forward to continuing to prepare for tough upcoming matches," added Ellis.

The Barons continue their season Friday when they play University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
