Box Score GREENSBURG, Pa. — Despite missing its top two players, the Baron tennis team continued its now seven-game winning streak on Friday over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. The 8-1 victory gives the Barons a 5-0 record in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
"We played without our top two players [Leonel Lacayo and Paul Jarzynka] in singles so most everyone had to play up two spots, and they still managed to pull through with a victory," said head coach Jeremy Ellis.
The doubles teams started the match with a sweep over the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats. The No. 1 doubles team, Brian Robau and Paul Jarzynka, won 8-0; No. 2 team, Leonel Lacayo and Luke Merry, came out victorious 8-1; and No. 3 team, John Shultis and Richard Pankus, finished out the wins with a final score of 8-1.
"Our doubles teams need to continue to play really well," noted Ellis, "and continue to improve into great doubles players for future matches." The AMCC championship is just weeks away, April 14-15.
The Barons continue to reveal their growing individual talent with each match and Friday proved no different with five victories in the singles round.
Sophomore Brian Robau defeated his singles opponent 6-1, 6-1; sophomore Luke Merry earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory; junior Richard Pankus won 6-3, 6-1; sophomore John Bruce followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win; and sophomore Mike Mahoney rounded out the wins 6-3, 6-1.
"The team unity keeps growing and it is encouraging to see," said Ellis. "We need everyone to fight together to accomplish our goals during season and post-season play."
The Barons are scheduled to play Mount Aloysius College on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
