Box Score NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.— The Lady Baron soccer team traveled to Westminster College on Tuesday where they lost 3-2 in overtime. This marks the second overtime loss on the young season for the Lady Barons.
FUS was leading 2-1 in the final minutes but the Titans got the game-tying goal in the 88th minute and the game-winner in overtime.
"We are very upset with this loss because we knew we could win," said FUS head coach Johann Marin. "But we are improving every game and the fact that this team is doing what they are doing with so many girls out due to injury is remarkable."
The team usually made up of 22 women only had 15 women able to play in today's game leaving just two players on the bench.
"However, this team is not able to settle for mediocrity so we are going to rise above the struggle of not having a bench," Marin said. "We are determined to grow from this suffering and be made stronger."
Sophomore Jordan Byrley scored the first goal of the game and her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute off of a cross assist from junior Katie Roemer to tap it into the goal.
It was only ten minutes later when sophomore standout from Ashley Ruttencutter found the back of the net unassisted with her left foot off of a deflection after a cross. Ruttencutter has scored or had an assist in every game the Lady Barons have played this season.
Franciscan held Westminster at a 2-0 score for the majority of the game but in the 62nd and 88th minutes the Titans broke their scoring drought and completed the comeback with a goal in overtime for the win.
"When the team plays as a united front they do incredible things so we need to continue to improve on that aspect of the game and move ahead to our game on Thursday," Marin said.
The Lady Barons move to 1-4 and continue their season on Thursday Sept. 13 at Thiel College with the game scheduled to start at 5p.m.
