New Offensive Formation Leaves Barons Vulnerable

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. - With a single day's recovery from their last game, the Franciscan men's soccer team took on the Thiel College Tomcats and suffered another loss, the final score 5-0.

"An early goal from Thiel in the first half put us back on our heels and made the team afraid to take risks," head coach Ward Rogers said, adding that this setback determined the feel for the rest of the game.

As Thiel continued to pressure Franciscan on both ends of the field, the Barons struggled to find goal scoring opportunities and let in another goal, making the score 2-0 at halftime. Losing forward, Brian Bobek in the second half due to illness only made things harder on the Baron's and the Tomcats put in another three shots.

Rogers said that Bobek, midfielder Jesse Salterelli, and defender John Herrmann all put forth strong effort on both ends of the field, but the men struggled to recover on defense whenever the team lost possession.

This was in large part due to the implementation of a new offensive formation at yesterday's practice.

"The purpose of the new formation is to generate more offensive pressure," Rogers said, "but one practice was not enough to perfect it. When we tried to create more scoring opportunities it made us very vulnerable."

With more time to focus on this new formation and passing accuracy, Rogers believes the men will be able to open up more shots and overcome the defensive weaknesses that determined today's game.

"The team is working very hard and we're very confident we can turn things around for our conference season," Rogers said.

The Barons will play Hiram at home this Saturday , September 15th at 4pm.
