STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's soccer team fell to Geneva College 3-0 Monday afternoon after not being able to convert shot opportunities to goals.

"It was a really excellent game of soccer tonight," head coach Johann Marin said. "We are playing quality and disciplined soccer. They are however not capitalizing on their opportunities for goals."

Both teams were able to get a large amount of shots off but Geneva was able to convert those chances into actual goals while the Lady Barons struggled to make the ball connect with the back of the net.

The Lady Barons came out ready to come back in the second half and took 11 of their 18 shots during that half. Twelve of the total 18 shots were shots on goal in an attempt to break the scoring drought but Geneva's goalkeeper Anna McMullen managed to save them all.

"The game is about goals and when we're not scoring we end up chasing the other team the whole game, but tonight we worked exceptionally hard," Marin said.

The Lady Barons continued to fight for possession of the ball and take shots from various angles. Their gutsy counter attack consisted of seven different women taking chances to shoot for a goal.

"We have confidence in attaining our goals we established for the season and are continuing to grow mentally, spiritually, and physically," Marin said

During the game the Geneva offense really challenged the Lady Baron defense to make quick transitions and get back to help defend the goal and hold them from scoring any more points.

"This was not best we have played. The other team came out knowing how to play our formations and we didn't adjust well," assistant coach Clare Smith said. "However, all the mistakes we made are very repairable and we will work on them for the future games."

Goalkeeper Lauren Koath made four impressive saves on the night as she dove and slid to stop shots while also communicating with her teammates.

"We are going to continue to work on finishing and are very confident in our ability to continue to grow," Marin said. "We are very excited for conference games because we are very prepared for fast games and talented teams."

The Lady Barons are now 2-5-1 on season and have their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game of the season on Sept. 22 at home versus Penn State Behrend scheduled to begin at 1p.m.
