Baron's Soccer Looks to Build on Strong First Half vs Geneva

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —Despite an improved offensive effort in the first half, the Franciscan University men's soccer team lost to Geneva College 5 - 0.

The Baron's began the game with their best half of the season but a slight break in the defensive formation in the second half, however, opened up the opportunity for Geneva College's first goal, ain the 52th minute. From there the Golden Tornadoes took over, resulting in four more goals.

"In the first half, our passing was greatly improved in the defensive and neutral thirds of the field. We were patient and disciplined, holding possession. In the second half we panicked and were impatient, trying to force the shot," head coach Ward Rogers said.

Rogers added that with each score for Geneva, the men began to struggle fundamentally, which led to a loss of on-field communication.

"For us to do well, we need to play with unity, to all be on the same page, but we lost that in the second half and fundamentally broke down," Rogers said, "Soccer is a ninety -minute game. We played the first forty-five well but need to be able to maintain that for the full ninety."

Looking forward to their first conference game on Saturday against Penn St.-Behrend, Rogers said that the team will be going back over this game and will be working to play with the same intensity they had in the first half.

"Behrend will be similar to Geneva. We need to isolate what went wrong in the second half and improve on that for Saturday," Rogers said.

The Barons, now 0-6 for the season, are scheduled to play Penn St.-Behrend at home this Saturday, September 22nd at 3pm.
