Turnovers Plague Barons in Loss to Greensburg

Box Score

GREENSBURG, Pa.—The Franciscan University men's soccer team took on the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg tonight, but despite adjustments and improvements in the Baron offense, ultimately fell 4-1.

Greensburg got the scoring started early with a goal in just the third minute of play. The Barons had an answer though, when Steubenville-native and Catholic Central graduate Peter Herrmann tied the score at one. Greensburg retaliated shortly after and made the score 2-1 and that is where it stayed for 42 minutes of play.

Two well-placed shots for the Bobcats late in the second half, however, finished off chances for a Baron victory.

"It was a fairly even game with a couple of mistakes on our part near the end of the second half which resulted in goals three and four to Greensburg," Rogers said. "Aside from those two critical turnovers, we had a much better offensive performance than ever before."

This was due, in part, to former defender Herrmann's transition to center-forward, which led to the team's lone goal on the night, a header off a cross-assist by midfielder Jace Vansteenburg.

"Peter [Herrmann] did a very nice job of creating space on offense. He will continue to play in that position," Rogers said.

Rogers said that defenders John Herrmann and Evan Olsen also played a critical part in the Baron defense, marking fast opponents and denying Pitt-Greensburg access to the center of the defensive third.

"Overall, we played better in both phases, offense and defense. We're starting to get people used to playing in certain positions, and that's resulting in much more coordinated movements and communication with each other," Rogers said, "In order to win, we have to make teams work much harder to score."

The team will continue its season with a focus on passing accuracy and overall speed of play and will travel to face Washington& Jefferson College this Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7pm.
