Lady Barons Dominate Possession but Lose 2 - 1

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Franciscan University's women's soccer team suffered a defeat of 2-1 against Medaille College after controlling most of the game and peppering the Maverick's with goalscoring chances.

The Lady Barons took 23 total shots throughout landing 13 shots on frame but only putting one successful into the net. Head Coach Johann Marin said that it is an absolute mystery as to why the women are unable to finish on their shot opportunities.

"They do everything right," Marin said. "The analogy that I use is like they know all the answers to the questions on a test but they don't circle the answers. They get all the way up to the goal, they know all of the information and then they don't circle their answers."

The Lady Barons were able to maintain possession and create chances due to their quick short passes and high energy.

"Today we really did play an excellent game of soccer," Marin said. "We did have possession majority of the game, we had more shots on goal, and we had more control over the game."

The only goal for the Lady Barons came from consistent performer Ashley Ruttencutter. In the 89th minute Ruttencutter connected with the ball to take her eighth and final shot in the game to score unassisted.

"We're going to continue playing our game because it's working for us we just need to follow through and finish," Marin said.

On the defensive side this was the first game back for sophomore captain Hannah Castree after being out with an injury.

"I've been itching to play for awhile. It's hard sitting on the bench and not be able to do anything. It was nice to be a voice on the field for the team and active in the play," Castree said.

Marin said that it was very important to have Hannah back in the game because she is a mature and talented player that serves as a natural leader and great asset to the defense.

Goalkeeper Lauren Koath had 8 saves on the game. Koath made multiple saves in one on one situations against one of Medaille's shooters.

"I'm just thanking everyone for their prayers and ask for continued prayers for all of my players that are injured right now," Marin said. "We ask for continued support as we are planning on bringing more goals and victories home."

The Lady Barons are now 0-2-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and 2-8-2 on the overall season. They continue their search for a victory when they take on Hilbert College on Oct. 6 at 1p.m.
